Moving offices? Don’t move what you’ll retire. Movers price by volume, weight, and labor, so every device you retire before the move is one you don’t pay to pack, transport, and set up — and then pay again to dispose of from the new storeroom. Sort first: move, redeploy, remarket, retire.

Then remember what the moving contract covers. A bill of lading covers physical loss and damage, typically by weight. It says nothing about the data on a hard drive. Retiring drives never board the truck: they are destroyed on-site or leave under a certified provider’s custody with a serialized manifest.

Devices that are moving are scanned out of the old address, sealed separately from the freight, and scanned in at the new one. At the end, every serial is installed, redeployed, or on a certificate. Zero unexplained. Let the mover move furniture.

Relocating, consolidating, or downsizing?

The full playbook covers the four-bucket sort, custody across two addresses, what to do with the surplus, staging the new site, the landlord handover, and the closing package — with a one-page checklist.
